Do Not Use Religion to Divide Nigeria, Warn Yoruba Islamic Clerics, Leaders

Yoruba Islamic clerics, alongside traditional and community leaders, have warned against attempts to use religion as a tool to divide Nigeria, emphasizing the need for unity and peaceful coexistence in the region.

Speaking at a recent interfaith gathering, the clerics stressed that religion should not be exploited for political or personal gain, noting that divisive rhetoric poses a serious threat to societal harmony.

They called on citizens and political actors alike to uphold tolerance and mutual respect among Nigeria’s diverse religious communities.

The clerics also highlighted the importance of religious education and dialogue in fostering understanding between communities. They warned that failure to address religious exploitation could escalate tensions and destabilize both local and national peace.

Traditional rulers and other Yoruba leaders at the meeting supported the clerics’ position, reiterating the region’s long-standing tradition of pluralism and cooperation among Muslims, Christians, and practitioners of indigenous religions.

They urged all stakeholders to reject extremism and work together to preserve the cultural and religious unity of Yorubaland.

The clerics announced plans to establish a joint monitoring committee to identify and counter efforts to manipulate religion for divisive purposes.

They also called on civil society, youth groups, and educational institutions to promote messages of tolerance and inclusion throughout the Southwest.

This unified stance by Yoruba religious and community leaders reflects growing concern over the politicization of faith and serves as a reminder of the critical role of interfaith dialogue in maintaining national cohesion.
