Glo Network Disruption Hits Abuja, Northern Nigeria, Subscribers Voice Frustration

Thousands of subscribers of mobile network provider Globacom Limited (Glo) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and several northern states were left without mobile voice and data services on Thursday as a major network disruption unfolded.

Glo confirmed in an official statement that the outage, which began around 11:49 a.m., was caused by multiple fibre cuts and high-loss incidents affecting key transmission routes. The company said engineers had been deployed and were actively working to restore full service.

Subscribers in Abuja, Kano, Jos, Zaria, and other northern centres reported difficulties making calls, sending texts, and accessing mobile internet. Coverage was described as patchy or entirely unavailable in several neighbourhoods, leaving many users unable to conduct essential transactions or communicate effectively.

Acknowledging the inconvenience, Glo stated: “We understand how important uninterrupted connectivity is to you,” and reassured customers that efforts to restore service were ongoing.

The company also used social media to provide updates to affected subscribers.

Industry analysts note that the outage underscores a recurring challenge for Nigerian telecom operators: the vulnerability of backbone infrastructure, particularly fibre-optic networks, and the widespread impact when these critical segments fail.

Glo’s technical teams continue to work on repairing the damaged fibre links, while subscribers are being urged to remain patient.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) may request a full report on the incident, especially if the disruption extends for several hours.

For now, affected users are advised to switch to Wi-Fi or use secondary SIM cards where possible while awaiting the full restoration of services.
