Kano House of Reps Member, Sagir Koki Withdraws from NNPP

A member of the House of Representatives from Kano Municipal, Engr. Sagir Ibrahim Koki, has formally renounced his membership of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), citing an unresolved tussle at the party’s national level that, he said, hinders his ability to serve constituents effectively.

In a letter dated 11 November 2025, Koki invoked his constitutional right to freedom of association and informed his ward leadership of his decision to step down from the party platform.

Koki, who serves as Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Petroleum Resources, explained that the internal leadership dispute at the centre of the NNPP made it “difficult, if not impossible” for him to continue to discharge his duties and deliver the representation the people of Kano Municipal expect. He thanked party members for the opportunity to serve and described the experience and support he received as valuable, even as he declared his intention to leave.

While his resignation letter did not name the next political home he will adopt, multiple reports say he is widely expected to join the All Progressives Congress (APC) after weeks of speculation. Political observers in Kano have watched a steady stream of defections since tensions within the NNPP escalated, a dynamic that some analysts say could reshape the state’s political alignments ahead of future contests.

Koki has not publicly confirmed any timetable for a formal defection.

Koki is not the only federal lawmaker moving away from his original platform in recent days. Media outlets report that at least one other House member has abandoned a different major party for similar reasons, underscoring a broader pattern of realignments driven by internal disputes and strategic calculations across several parties. Party sources in Abuja and Kano say leadership wrangling and parallel claims to authority inside the NNPP have been major push factors for members reconsidering their affiliations.

Reacting to Koki’s announcement, NNPP officials had not immediately issued a public statement by late Wednesday.

Politicians and analysts alike will be watching whether his exit triggers further moves by other lawmakers from the party and how the NNPP leadership crisis will be resolved or deepen in the days ahead.
