FG Condemns Disturbance at Edo West African Art Museum
The Federal Government has condemned the recent disruption at the Museum of West African Art (MOWAA) in Benin City, Edo State, emphasizing the importance of protecting Nigeria’s cultural heritage.
The statement was made by Hannatu Musawa, Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism, and the Creative Economy, who said her ministry is closely monitoring developments at the museum.
She added that the Presidency has been briefed and is giving the matter urgent attention.
According to the minister, the ministry is actively engaging with the Edo State Government, security agencies, and relevant stakeholders to ascertain the full circumstances surrounding the incident and to ensure an appropriate response.
“Our cultural institutions are custodians of Nigeria’s history, identity, and collective memory,” Musawa said, stressing the need to safeguard them against disruptions that could undermine their role in preserving national heritage.
No injuries or damages were reported immediately, and authorities are working to restore normalcy at the museum while investigating the cause of the disturbance.
Cultural analysts have noted that incidents like this highlight the need for enhanced security and community engagement around national cultural institutions to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
