Rafiatu Lawal Shines Bright as She Wins Three Gold Medals for Nigeria at Islamic Solidarity Games
Team Nigeria’s weightlifting sensation, Rafiatu Folashade Lawal, once again proved her dominance on the global stage by clinching three gold medals in the women’s 58kg category at the 6th Islamic Solidarity Games held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Sunday.
Lawal, known for her explosive power and flawless technique, produced a stunning performance to sweep all the available gold medals in snatch, clean and jerk, and total lift events. Her lifts not only showcased her consistency but also reaffirmed her position as one of Africa’s leading weightlifters.
The 2022 Commonwealth Games champion outclassed a strong field, finishing ahead of Niogora Abdullaeva of Uzbekistan, who settled for silver, and Noura Essam of Egypt, who took bronze.
Lawal’s victory added to Nigeria’s growing medal haul at the Games and further cemented her reputation as a force to be reckoned with in international weightlifting.
Speaking after her triumph, Lawal expressed gratitude to God, her coaches, and Nigerians for their support.
“I’m proud to lift the flag high once again. Every medal is a reminder of the hard work, discipline, and belief that it takes to represent Nigeria,” she said.
Team Nigeria officials and fans have hailed Lawal’s achievement as a major highlight of the country’s participation in the Islamic Solidarity Games, describing her feat as a testament to Nigeria’s growing strength in women’s weightlifting.
The Islamic Solidarity Games, which bring together athletes from over 50 member countries of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), continue in Riyadh with competitions across athletics, boxing, taekwondo, swimming, and other sports.
Lawal’s triple gold triumph is expected to serve as a morale booster for Team Nigeria as they aim for a strong finish at the multi-sport event.
