Nigeria Records 81% Drop in Terror-Related Deaths, Claims Presidency
Nigeria has recorded a significant 81 per cent reduction in terror-related deaths since 2015, according to a statement released by the Presidency on Sunday.
In a post shared on its official X account, the Presidency attributed the sharp decline to more effective counter-insurgency strategies and improved coordination among security agencies, as well as stronger cooperation with affected communities.
The statement revealed that more than 13,000 terrorists were neutralised in the past year, while over 124,000 insurgents and their families have surrendered to authorities. It also disclosed that about 2.1 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) have returned to their homes, with reconstruction efforts underway in several previously devastated areas.
To further support recovery efforts, the Federal Government has established a Resettlement Scheme for Persons Impacted by Conflict, aimed at rebuilding communities and reintegrating displaced citizens.
According to the Presidency, since 2023, Nigeria has intensified its crackdown on terrorism through strengthened inter-agency collaboration, resulting in the arrest, neutralisation, or conviction of numerous terrorists, including those linked to major attacks across the country.
“Since 2024, over 124 terrorists and insurgents have been successfully convicted, while several others — including members of the Ansaru leadership and those behind the 2022 Owo Church attack and the Yelwata (Benue) reprisal incidents — are currently facing trial,” the statement read.
It further outlined a series of ongoing initiatives to bolster national security, including joint security task forces, enhanced border surveillance with regional allies, compensation for victims of terrorism, and intelligence sharing with international partners.
The Presidency reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to restoring lasting peace, rebuilding affected communities, and ensuring that Nigeria’s sovereignty remains fully protected.
