Golfers from 11 Nations to Light Up Ikoyi Ladies Golf Club’s Golden Jubilee
The Ikoyi Ladies Golf Club is gearing up for a landmark celebration as the 50th edition of its flagship tournament opens next week.
Scheduled to run from November 11 to 13, the event will host 150 amateur golfers representing 11 countries, making it one of the most international gatherings in the club’s storied history.
According to Lady Captain *Peggy Onwu*, who has spearheaded the preparations, the championship is more than a competition; it’s a showcase of resilience, inclusion, and cultural exchange.
“This year’s theme, Go Beyond: Golf and Golfing, captures the spirit of pushing boundaries both on and off the green,” she explained during a press briefing.
The tournament will feature a 54‑hole Gross Event, with a twilight evening on the eve of the opening day offering cocktails, music, and mini‑challenges to kick off the festivities.
The prize pool is equally impressive. The overall winner will receive a premium ticket to the United States, a championship trophy, and a cash award ranging from ₦50,000 to ₦75,000. Additional categories include veteran and super‑veteran divisions for players over 60, as well as a Masterclass for beginners aimed at nurturing the next generation of Nigerian golfers.
Sponsorship has been robust, with partners such as PwC, Flutterwave, Delta Air Lines, First E&P, and Weststar Associates joining the celebration.
PwC will host a session on tax reforms, while Flutterwave will discuss digital transformation in business.
The event is expected to deliver a significant boost to Lagos’s hospitality sector, with hotels and local businesses poised to benefit from the influx of international visitors.
“The economic ripple effect is undeniable,” said Akinwumi Akintola, Chairman of Ikoyi Club 1938. “Beyond the sport, we’re showcasing Nigerian culture, cuisine, and warmth to a global audience.”
Among the notable participants are Nigerian‑born Italian fashion icon and golfer Bali Lawal, Ugandan star Patricia Mbabazi, and several rising talents from Kenya, Ghana, Zambia, and beyond.
Their presence underscores the tournament’s role as a platform for African golfers to gain international exposure.
The Ikoyi Ladies Open has evolved from a modest local competition into a cornerstone of Nigerian golf, celebrated for its commitment to sustainability, community development, and gender inclusion.
As the countdown begins, excitement is palpable among players, sponsors, and fans alike.
