Ngozi Okonjo‑Iweala Repudiates Viral Claim Criticising Tinubu’s Security Strategy
The Director‑General of the World Trade Organisation, Dr Ngozi Okonjo‑Iweala, has publicly disavowed a widely circulated social‑media post that purported to quote her attacking President Bola Tinubu over Nigeria’s insecurity.
The fabricated message, which appeared on platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram, claimed she had accused Nigerian leaders of “talking more than taking action” against banditry and insurgency and urged the president to “stop the damage‑control speeches” and focus on securing citizens.
In a statement released on her verified X (formerly Twitter) account on Saturday, Okonjo‑Iweala labelled the post as “completely false” and “malicious.” She warned the public not to share the misinformation and announced that legal action is being pursued against those responsible for the impersonation.
“Beware, this story going around on WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook is false! We are taking action! The person who did this could not even spell my name,” she wrote, adding that the culprit should own the message instead of hiding behind her identity.
The viral claim had sparked heated reactions, with some users interpreting it as a critique of the Tinubu administration’s handling of terrorism, banditry and kidnappings.
President Tinubu responded by reaffirming Nigeria’s constitutional guarantee of religious freedom and emphasizing his government’s collaboration with faith leaders to promote peace.
He also underscored that portrayals of Nigeria as intolerant are inaccurate and contradict the nation’s diversity.
The controversy comes amid heightened diplomatic tension following U.S. President Donald Trump’s remarks suggesting possible military action if Christians continue to be targeted in Nigeria.
Trump’s statements, made on his Truth Social platform, have added to the charged atmosphere, prompting the Nigerian government to reiterate its commitment to working with international partners while maintaining sovereignty.
Okonjo‑Iweala’s office reiterated her focus on WTO duties and promoting trade‑driven growth for developing economies, urging Nigerians to verify information before sharing.
The incident highlights the prevalence of misinformation and impersonation on digital platforms, particularly around politically sensitive issues.
