NAFDAC Cracks Down on Expiry‑Date Tampering in Plateau, Seizes Warehouse
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) on Thursday swooped on a warehouse in the Apata neighbourhood of Jos, Plateau State, arresting two individuals for allegedly re‑validating and altering the expiry dates of food and drug products.
The operation, led by NAFDAC’s Investigation and Enforcement Directorate, uncovered a stash of goods whose labels had been tampered with to extend shelf life, posing a serious health risk to consumers.
According to The agency’s spokesperson, the raid followed weeks of intelligence gathering that pointed to systematic falsification of expiration markings at the facility.
“During the inspection, we discovered machines used for re‑branding and altering dates, alongside large quantities of repackaged medicines and consumables,” the official said. “The two suspects were taken into custody and will be charged in court.”
The value of the seized items is estimated at N1.9 billion, highlighting the scale of the illicit operation.
NAFDAC reiterated its commitment to safeguarding public health, urging citizens to remain vigilant and verify product authenticity through the agency’s verification channels.
The crackdown is part of a broader national effort to eliminate counterfeit and expired goods from the market, following recent high‑profile raids in Lagos, Abia, and Anambra states.
Authorities have pledged to intensify surveillance and impose stricter penalties on offenders.
