LAUTECH Management Shuts Down University for Two Weeks Over Student’s Death in Road Accident

The management of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Iseyin campus, has announced a two-week suspension of academic activities following the death of a 200-level student who was killed by a hit-and-run commercial driver along the Iseyin/Saki Road in Oyo State.

The deceased, identified as a student from the Department of Agricultural Economics, was reportedly on her way to school when the tragic incident occurred on Friday morning.

The driver fled the scene immediately after the accident, prompting angry students to stage a protest during which they set the commercial vehicle ablaze in frustration.

Confirming the development in a statement on Saturday, the university’s Registrar, Olayinka Balogun, said the decision to suspend activities was taken in view of the grief and emotional distress caused by the unfortunate event.

“The management of LAUTECH, Ogbomoso, deeply regrets to announce the tragic passing of a 200-level student of the Department of Agricultural Economics, who was fatally hit by a fleeing driver in Iseyin,” the statement read. “This heartbreaking incident has cast a pall over the university community. We extend our sincere condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased.”

Balogun further disclosed that academic activities at the Iseyin campus have been suspended for two weeks with immediate effect, to allow students and staff to mourn and recover from the shock. “All students in the College of Agricultural Sciences and Renewable Natural Resources are to proceed on a two-week break,” he stated. “Academic activities are expected to resume on Monday, November 24, 2025. Officers on essential duties will receive directives through the usual channels.”

The Registrar urged students to remain calm, stay safe, and show solidarity with one another during this difficult time, adding that the institution stands with the bereaved family in mourning their loss.
