Labour Party Loses Peter Obi’s Anambra Polling Unit
The Labour Party (LP) suffered a setback on Saturday as it lost in the polling unit of its national leader and 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, during the ongoing Anambra governorship election.
At Polling Unit 019, Agulu Ward 11, Anaocha Local Government Area, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Nicholas Ukachukwu, secured 73 votes, defeating LP’s George Moghalu, who garnered 57 votes. The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) came third with 38 votes.
Mr Obi had arrived earlier at the same polling unit to cast his vote, drawing considerable attention from voters and observers.
His presence was seen as a morale boost for the Labour Party, which entered the election hoping to consolidate its growing influence in the South-East following its strong performance in the 2023 general elections.
The outcome, however, contrasts sharply with the 2023 presidential poll, in which Obi overwhelmingly dominated Anambra State, winning more than 95 per cent of the total votes.
The result at his home polling unit has therefore raised discussions about voter realignment and shifting political loyalties in the state.
Political analysts suggest that the APC’s victory in the unit may reflect evolving grassroots dynamics and voter sentiment influenced by local issues rather than national party appeal
They also note that Anambra’s political environment remains highly competitive, with APGA, APC, and LP all maintaining visible structures across the state.
Mr Obi, a former governor of Anambra and two-term state leader under the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), joined the Labour Party in 2022 and became its presidential candidate, leading what many described as a mass movement of young voters and reform-minded citizens.
Saturday’s result, observers say, underscores the unpredictable nature of Anambra politics, where strong personalities and local alliances often determine electoral outcomes more than party loyalty.
