Uphold Integrity, Independence, CJN Charges Code of Conduct Tribunal

Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has urged the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) to remain firm, independent, and guided by integrity in the discharge of its duties, particularly in cases involving public officials.

She made the call in Abuja during the swearing-in of the newly appointed Chairman of the CCT, Barrister Mainasara Kogo Umar, who succeeds the former chairman, Danladi Umar. Justice Kekere-Ekun reminded the new chairman and members of the tribunal that the CCT occupies a critical position in Nigeria’s anti-corruption framework and must not bow to political or external pressures.

“The CCT is a vital component in the fight against corruption and unethical conduct in public service,” the CJN stated. “You must discharge your duties without fear or favour, affection or ill will. Your loyalty should be to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, not to any individual or group.”

She emphasized that integrity remains the foundation of justice, warning that any compromise in the tribunal’s independence would erode public trust in the judiciary.

The CJN further charged the tribunal’s leadership to ensure that its judgments are rooted in fairness, transparency, and respect for due process.

Justice Kekere-Ekun also urged tribunal members to adhere strictly to the ethical standards expected of judicial officers. She reminded them that their work often involves politically sensitive matters that test the strength and neutrality of Nigeria’s judicial system.

In his response, the new CCT Chairman, Mainasara Kogo Umar, pledged to uphold the rule of law and ensure that the tribunal maintains its credibility as an impartial adjudicatory body.

He promised to build on the legacies of his predecessors while enhancing efficiency and public confidence in the tribunal’s operations.

The Code of Conduct Tribunal plays a key role in adjudicating cases of misconduct and asset declaration breaches by public officers. Over the years, it has handled several high-profile cases involving top political figures, making it one of the most scrutinized institutions in Nigeria’s justice system.

Justice Kekere-Ekun’s charge serves as a strong reminder of the judiciary’s ongoing commitment to accountability, transparency, and independence—principles she described as “indispensable to sustaining public confidence in the administration of justice.”
