Stop Distracted Driving, FRSC Urges Delta Motorists Asaba

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Delta State Command, has cautioned motorists against distracted driving, warning that negligence behind the wheel remains a leading cause of fatal road crashes across the state.

Speaking during the flag-off of the 2025 Ember Months Safety Campaign in Asaba, the Delta Sector Commander of the FRSC, Corps Commander Bisi Kazeem, said the campaign, themed “Take Responsibility for Your Safety: Stop Distracted Driving,” is aimed at raising awareness on the dangers of divided attention while driving. He explained that the Corps has observed a worrying rise in road accidents caused by phone use, eating, fatigue, and other distractions among drivers, stressing that “a split-second of distraction could lead to a lifetime of regret. “We urge all drivers in Delta State to make safety their top priority. Distracted driving not only endangers your life but also the lives of passengers and other road users. The FRSC will not tolerate any form of negligence,” Kazeem said The campaign, which forms part of the FRSC’s nationwide Ember Months operations, involves road patrols, free vehicle safety checks, and community engagement aimed at reducing road crashes during the festive season when vehicular movement is usually at its peak. Kazeem noted that officers have been deployed across major routes in the state — including Asaba-Benin, Warri-Patani, and Agbor-Umunede highways — to enforce compliance with traffic regulations. He added that drivers caught using mobile phones while driving, overloading vehicles, or violating speed limits will face immediate penalties. The Commander also appealed to commercial transport unions, tricycle riders, and private vehicle owners to take responsibility for safety on the road by ensuring their vehicles are roadworthy and avoiding risky behaviours such as drunk driving and wrongful overtaking. “This campaign is not about punishment but prevention. We want every family to arrive safely at their destination this festive season,” he said. The FRSC has partnered with traditional rulers, market leaders, and the media in Delta State to sustain the message of safe driving and reduce preventable crashes caused by human error. Meanwhile, the Corps has assured the public that special patrols will continue throughout November and December, with a focus on highways identified as accident-prone zones. The FRSC also advised motorists to report reckless drivers or emergencies via the toll-free number 122 or through any of its local commands across the state.
