Namibia Now First African Nation with All-Female Top Leadership
In a groundbreaking move, Namibia has become the first country in Africa to have women occupying the top three government positions, marking a significant milestone in the continent’s journey towards gender equality.
President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, Vice President Lucia Witbooi, and Speaker of the National Assembly Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila are leading the charge, making history as the first all-female leadership team in Africa’s top government positions.
This historic shift is not limited to the top positions, as more than 60% of Namibia’s newly appointed cabinet ministers are women, holding key portfolios in finance, foreign affairs, health, education, and gender equality.
This marks the first time Namibia’s cabinet has had a female majority.
Nandi-Ndaitwah, a veteran politician and freedom fighter, was sworn in as Namibia’s first female president on March 21, 2025, following the passing of former President Hage Geingob. Her presidency is a testament to her decades of public service and commitment to gender equality.
The appointment of Witbooi as Vice President and Kuugongelwa-Amadhila as Speaker of the National Assembly further solidifies Namibia’s position as a trailblazer in African governance.
Witbooi, a former educator, brings a wealth of experience to her new role, while Kuugongelwa-Amadhila’s appointment makes her the first woman to oversee Namibia’s legislature.
This historic moment is a significant step towards achieving gender parity in leadership and serves as an inspiration to women across Africa.
As Nandi-Ndaitwah stated, “Women can also hold authority,” emphasizing the need to challenge societal biases and promote women’s leadership.
