Jonathan, Osinbajo, Governors to Lead National Summit on Electoral Reforms
A major national political summit aimed at advancing electoral reforms ahead of the 2027 general elections is set to hold in Abuja next week, with former President Goodluck Jonathan and former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo among the prominent figures expected to attend.
The high-profile gathering, coming amid growing discussions on electoral integrity and recent global political tensions triggered by U.S. President Donald Trump’s remarks, is expected to bring together state governors, lawmakers, civil society leaders, and representatives of political parties.
According to organisers, the summit will focus on strengthening Nigeria’s democratic institutions, improving the conduct of elections, and promoting citizen participation in governance.
Discussions will also address the challenges of electoral violence, vote-buying, judicial credibility, and the role of technology in ensuring transparency during the 2027 polls.
A statement by the summit planning committee noted that both Jonathan and Osinbajo will deliver keynote addresses reflecting on Nigeria’s democratic journey and the need for consensus-driven reforms.
The event will also feature panel sessions with electoral stakeholders, security agencies, youth and women groups, and representatives of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
“The goal is to develop actionable recommendations that will guide policymakers and institutions in building a more credible, inclusive, and accountable electoral process,” the statement read in part.
Political analysts say the presence of former leaders such as Jonathan and Osinbajo underscores the urgency of national dialogue on electoral governance, particularly as Nigeria prepares for another crucial election cycle.
The summit is also expected to issue a communiqué addressing concerns about external influence and political instability, following Trump’s recent controversial statements that have sparked global diplomatic reactions.
The event will hold in Abuja, with participation expected from across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones and key development partners.
