Governor Uba Sani Rejigs Kaduna’s Transportation Sector
Governor Uba Sani has detailed a massive N30 billion overhaul of Kaduna State’s transportation sector, announcing multiple projects aimed at modernizing urban mobility, reducing emissions, and creating thousands of jobs.
The plans include launching the Kaduna Bus Rapid Transit (KBRT), developing a Light Rail Project, and expanding bus terminal infrastructure across the state.
Governor Sani disclosed that his administration has set aside N30 billion as counterpart funding for the implementation of the KBRT, a collaborative project between Kaduna State and Agence Française de Développement (AFD).
The project is historic, being the first of its kind in Northern Nigeria.
Dedicated Corridor: A 24km dedicated corridor stretching from Rigachikun to Sabon Tasha.
The service will use 120 articulated buses running on CNG, cutting carbon dioxide CO_2 emissions by 38\% and saving commuters N1.8 billion annually in fuel costs.
The project is expected to create 3,200 direct jobs (drivers, maintenance engineers) and 11,000 indirect jobs (ICT, security, cleaning).
To further modernize the network, the proposed Kaduna Light Rail Project has reached an advanced stage. Phase 1 will reinstate the old rail gauge from Rigachikun to Sabon Tasha, while Phase 2 will link Millennium City to the Rigasa-Abuja/Kaduna rail line.
Additionally, the administration launched the Kaduna Subsidized Transport Scheme (KSTS) in June to cushion the effects of fuel subsidy removal.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu commissioned 100 brand new CNG/Hybrid buses for the scheme. Governor Sani recalled granting a six-month free ride for students, workers, and retirees, a benefit that has saved commuters more than N500 million since July 7, 2025.
To enhance efficiency, over 200 new bus stops are currently under construction across the state.
Governor Sani highlighted progress on several major infrastructure projects:
The facility, currently 75\% completed, is described as one of Nigeria’s premier bus terminals. It will consolidate all illegal motor parks along the southern corridor into a single hub, boosting internally-generated revenue and creating thousands of jobs.
The old Kawo Motor Park will be relocated to the Sobawa Motor Park, and a world-class Motor Park is under construction at Millennium City at the Eastern By Pass corridor.
The state is collaborating with private investors to upgrade and digitalize the two Trailer Parks at Tafa (60% completed) and Maraban Jos (30% completed). Each park is designed to accommodate 500 trucks.
Finally, the Governor detailed the revitalization of Kaduna Line, the franchise mode of transportation. His administration cleared an inherited debt of over N70 million, introduced the E-ticketing system (digitization), harmonized illegal motor parks, and created additional routes to revive the company’s mutual collaboration with mass transit partners.
