US Genocide Allegation, Proof Government’s Failure To Protect Nigerians, Says Bolaji Abdullahi

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has said that the recent claims by the United States suggesting that Christians in Nigeria are facing genocide are a direct reflection of the Federal Government’s failure to protect its citizens and manage the country’s security and foreign relations effectively

Speaking in Abuja on Tuesday, the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Bolaji Abdullahi, said the development exposed the government’s lack of coordination in handling both internal security and international diplomacy. He said it was embarrassing that Nigeria had allowed foreign leaders to define its internal crisis due to poor leadership and communication from those in power Abdullahi stated that while the ADC disagreed with the description of the violence in Nigeria as “genocide,” it was concerned that the situation had degenerated to the point where the United States and other world powers now view the country as incapable of protecting its citizens. He said the continued killings, kidnappings, and banditry in different parts of the country showed that the government had failed to provide security for all Nigerians regardless of religion or ethnicity He criticised the administration of President Bola Tinubu for failing to fill key diplomatic positions, adding that Nigeria’s voice on the global stage had been weakened by the absence of appointed ambassadors and a coherent foreign policy. Abdullahi said the government’s inaction was one of the reasons why the country had become vulnerable to external criticism and misrepresentation The ADC spokesperson also condemned US President Donald Trump’s comments suggesting possible military intervention in Nigeria, describing them as reckless and insensitive. He said what Nigeria needed was support to strengthen its democracy and improve governance, not threats of military action. Abdullahi called on the government to take urgent steps to overhaul the security architecture, improve intelligence gathering, and rebuild public confidence in national institutions. He said the failure of successive administrations to address the root causes of insecurity — including poverty, unemployment, and injustice — had created fertile ground for extremism and communal violence While the Federal Government has rejected the genocide allegations, insisting that there is no state-sponsored religious persecution, the ADC maintained that Abuja must go beyond denial and take responsibility for protecting lives and defending the country’s image internationally. Abdullahi stressed that the government should act swiftly to restore peace across affected regions and engage in genuine dialogue with international partners to find lasting solutions to the insecurity challenges facing the country He urged Nigerians to remain united and not allow external narratives to divide the nation along religious or ethnic lines, adding that the country’s security crisis required collective action and honest leadership.
