Delta North APC Endorses Anioma State Creation, Declares Zone Ready for Statehood
The Delta North chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has formally thrown its weight behind the creation of Anioma State, declaring the zone fully prepared for statehood and calling on the National Assembly to make it the sixth state in Nigeria’s Southeast geopolitical region.
In a letter dated November 3, 2025, addressed to the Chairman of the Senate Subcommittee on State Creation, Senator Mohammed Tahir Monguno, the APC Delta North Chairman, Chief Adizue Eluaka, said the demand for Anioma State reflects a collective resolve across the entire senatorial district.
“The APC Delta North Senatorial District is fully and unequivocally in support of the creation of Anioma State. The realisation of Anioma State stands as both a matter of fairness and strategic advantage for the federation,” Eluaka stated.
He noted that the Southeast remains the only zone with five states while other regions have six — with one northern zone hosting seven — describing the imbalance as a long-standing injustice. According to him, Anioma, with its strong Igbo roots, is best positioned to correct the anomaly.
Eluaka stressed that the agitation for Anioma State is not an emotional demand but a structured, legislative initiative supported by extensive documentation, adding that no other proposal before the National Assembly is as well developed.
He also commended Senator Ned Nwoko, whose motion reignited the national debate on state creation, saying his advocacy has brought renewed legitimacy and visibility to the Anioma cause.
Recalling the historical marginalisation of Anioma people, Eluaka said their experience of persecution during the civil war era left lasting scars.
“The tragic experience of stigmatisation over our Igbo identity led to years of denial and internal conflict. Creating Anioma State presents a historic opportunity for healing, affirmation, and restoration of pride,” he said.
He argued that Anioma possesses the population size, landmass, administrative experience, and economic strength necessary for full statehood, urging the Senate and President Bola Tinubu to treat the demand as both a moral and strategic imperative.
“Anioma State is both an act of justice and a strategic investment in national cohesion. The Senate must rise to this moment. This is a unifying national project,” he declared.
Meanwhile, the traditional ruler of Idumuje-Unor in Aniocha North Local Government Area, His Royal Majesty Obi Charles Chukwunweike Anyasi III, has reaffirmed that the people of Delta North, widely known as Anioma, are ethnically Igbo.
Speaking on a TVC programme, Behind the Headlines, the monarch explained that the name “Anioma,” meaning the good land, was coined by Sir Dennis Osadebay using an acronym — “A” for Aniocha, “N” for Ndokwa, “I” for Ika, and “O” for Oshimili — with “M” and “A” added for rhythm and poetic balance.
Obi Anyasi said the affirmation of Anioma’s Igbo identity should not divide the people but serve as a unifying truth in their quest for statehood.
