China Backs Tinubu Government on Sovereignty, Rejects U.S. Threats Against Nigeria

China has openly rejected what it described as “U.S. threats” against Nigeria following comments by American President Donald Trump suggesting possible military intervention over alleged persecution of Christians in the country. Beijing condemned the remarks as an attempt to use religion and human rights as tools of interference in another nation’s internal affairs.

Speaking at a press briefing in Beijing, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning reaffirmed China’s support for Nigeria’s sovereignty, urging the United States to respect international law and avoid actions that could destabilize Africa’s largest democracy.

“China firmly opposes any country using religion and human rights as an excuse to interfere in other countries’ internal affairs or threaten them with sanctions and force,” Mao stated. “As Nigeria’s comprehensive strategic partner, China supports the Nigerian government in leading its people on a development path suited to its national conditions.”

The statement came amid mounting tensions between Abuja and Washington after Trump’s controversial warning that the U.S. could consider “decisive military measures” if Nigeria failed to stop alleged killings of Christians. Nigerian officials have since dismissed the accusation, insisting that the violence in parts of the country is driven by terrorism and banditry that affect both Christians and Muslims alike.

Beijing’s intervention adds a new dimension to the diplomatic dispute, underscoring the widening global divide between Washington and Beijing over influence in Africa. China, which has heavily invested in Nigerian infrastructure, trade, and energy projects, reiterated its commitment to non-interference and mutual respect in international relations.

Observers say China’s statement is both a show of solidarity with Nigeria and a strategic positioning against U.S. influence on the continent. By publicly backing President Bola Tinubu’s administration, Beijing signals that it views Nigeria not only as a key partner but also as a test case for defending the principle of sovereignty in Africa.

The Nigerian government welcomed China’s remarks, describing them as a reflection of “genuine friendship and respect for Nigeria’s independence.” Officials at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the government would continue to work with international partners who value cooperation over coercion.

Diplomatic analysts believe the episode could deepen the geopolitical rivalry between China and the United States, with Nigeria finding itself at the center of a broader global contest for influence. For now, however, both Abuja and Beijing appear united in rejecting any notion of foreign military intervention or externally driven pressure over internal security issues.
