Use Anambra Election as Test of Credibility, Fresh Commitment to Democracy, Atiku Charges INEC
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to demonstrate a renewed commitment to transparency and credibility in the forthcoming Anambra governorship election scheduled for November 8, 2025.
Atiku, in a statement issued on Sunday, described the election as an opportunity for the electoral body to prove that it has truly “turned a new page” and restored public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic process. He urged INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, to ensure the exercise is free, fair, and devoid of any external interference or manipulation. According to the former Vice President, the credibility of the Anambra election will serve as a critical test for INEC’s leadership and a reflection of the Commission’s readiness to deliver elections that genuinely reflect the will of the people. He warned that the process must not be compromised to favour any political party, stressing that Nigerians are watching closely. Atiku also appealed to residents and registered voters in Anambra State to come out in large numbers and exercise their franchise peacefully, describing the poll as a chance to usher in a new era of responsible governance. He reiterated his support for the candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Nwosu Chima John, whom he said represents the vision of unity, competence, and service that the state needs. The Anambra election, one of the key off-cycle polls scheduled by INEC for 2025, has drawn national attention as political parties intensify their campaigns. Civil society groups, election observers, and security agencies have also pledged to monitor the process closely to ensure transparency and fairness. Atiku emphasized that the conduct of the Anambra poll will either reinforce or further erode citizens’ faith in the nation’s electoral system. He expressed hope that INEC would seize the opportunity to redeem its image and set a new benchmark for credible elections in Nigeria.
