Nuno Claims First West Ham Win in 3–1 Fightback Against Newcastle
West Ham United manager Nuno Espirito Santo recorded his first victory in charge of the club on Sunday, as the Hammers produced a stunning second-half comeback to defeat Newcastle United 3–1 at the London Stadium.
Despite falling behind early in the game, West Ham showed remarkable resilience and attacking intent to turn the tie around, giving their home supporters renewed hope in what has been a challenging Premier League campaign.
Newcastle took the lead midway through the first half through Callum Wilson, who capitalised on a defensive lapse to slot past Alphonse Areola.
The Magpies looked in control heading into the break, but Nuno’s men emerged for the second half with renewed energy and purpose.
Jarrod Bowen levelled the score shortly after the restart with a smart finish following a quick counterattack.
The equaliser spurred the Hammers on, and their persistence paid off when Mohammed Kudus fired home a powerful strike to make it 2–1. Substitute Michail Antonio sealed the victory in stoppage time with a composed finish after a clever through ball from Lucas Paquetá.
The result marked only West Ham’s second league win of the season but was particularly significant as Nuno’s first since taking over from David Moyes.
Speaking after the match, Nuno praised his players’ spirit and determination, saying, “It was an important win not just for me, but for the whole team and our fans. We showed character to come from behind against a strong Newcastle side.
This is the kind of fight we need to keep showing.”
Despite the win, West Ham remain in the relegation zone, though they have now closed the gap to just three points behind 17th-placed Burnley their next opponents in a crucial relegation six-pointer.
The victory has also boosted morale among supporters, who will hope the result marks the beginning of a revival under Nuno’s leadership as West Ham aim to climb out of danger and restore stability to their season.
