FG Hands Over Key Road Projects to Abia Government Under Renewed Hope Infrastructure Drive

The Federal Government has officially transferred the responsibility for completing several strategic federal road projects in Abia State to the state government, marking what officials describe as a fresh model of collaboration aimed at accelerating infrastructure development under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda.

The handover, approved by President Tinubu, was announced by the Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, during a civic reception held in honour of Governor Alex Otti at the Enyimba International Stadium in Aba.

According to a statement issued on Sunday by the Director of Press and Public Relations in the Ministry of Works, Mohammed Ahmed, the projects handed over include the Owerri–Umuaka Road, Onuigbo–Umuahia Road, Omezuo Bridge, and Umuahia–Ikot Ekpene Road—all vital transport routes connecting communities and supporting economic activity across the South-East.

Ahmed noted that the transfer followed a formal request by the Abia State Government and was approved by the President “based on mutual understanding” to ensure faster completion and improved road quality.

Speaking at the event, Minister Umahi praised Governor Otti for his “visionary and inclusive approach to governance,” describing the collaboration as an example of leadership focused on people’s welfare rather than political affiliation. “I’m pleased that many of our governors are taking bold steps to address infrastructure challenges head-on,” Umahi said. “These roads have long suffered from years of neglect and limited funding, and this partnership will finally bring relief to the people.”

Umahi also called on residents of Abia and the wider South-East to continue supporting the Tinubu administration, noting that the region has benefited from several federal appointments and ongoing road reconstruction projects.

He cited the appointment of the Chief of Air Staff from the South-East as an example of the President’s inclusive approach to governance.

“The Renewed Hope agenda is about fairness and balanced development,” Umahi added, emphasizing that major highways across the region are currently being rehabilitated to enhance mobility and regional trade.

In his remarks, Governor Otti expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for granting the approval, describing the decision as a practical step that directly benefits citizens.

“This gesture shows that governance is about service, not politics,” Otti said. “It’s not the first time Abia has intervened in federal projects, and and it won’t be the last. What matters most is that our people get the roads they deserve.”

The development is seen as part of the Federal Government’s broader strategy to foster collaboration with states in delivering critical infrastructure across Nigeria.
