Cultists Kill Man at Father’s Funeral in Cross River

Tensions are running dangerously high in Ekori town, located in the Yakurr Local Government Area of Cross River State, following the fatal shooting of a young man during his father’s funeral wake-keep.

The victim, identified as Sampson Udo, was killed last night at the venue of the funeral wake-keep for his father, who was the community head.

Reports indicate that a group of “drug-influenced cultists” opened fire, resulting in the tragic and senseless death of Sampson.

The killing has triggered widespread outrage and fear in the community.

Chief Okoi Obono-Obla, a traditional ruler in Ugep and former presidential aide, confirmed the incident, stating there is “serious tension in the community.”

Chief Obono-Obla warned that if urgent action is not taken, the situation could escalate into a “bloody conflict” as rival gangs are reportedly preparing for a major fight. This tragic event is the latest in a series of drug-related violence and cross-fire incidents that have claimed lives in Ugep and other parts of Yakurr LGA over the last three months.

The traditional ruler urgently called on all stakeholders, including community leaders, security agencies, and peace advocates, to intervene immediately.

He expressed deep sadness over the social decay in Yakurr LGA, which he has previously attributed to corrupt politicians and misguided leaders.

Chief Obono-Obla had even petitioned the Inspector General of Police, the National Security Adviser, and the Department of State Services (DSS) about the severe security situation about two months prior.

The incident was described as “deeply saddening” by Philip Obin, a former special assistant to ex-Vice President Prof Yemi Osibanjo.

Obin lamented the violence, noting the pain of seeing Yakurr LGA—once known for its strong communal spirit—drifting toward fear and division.

He stressed that the loss of Sampson Udo is a “wake-up call” and joined the call for security agencies, traditional institutions, and all levels of government to “step in swiftly.”

Obin concluded that “The time to rebuild Yakurr’s unity and moral strength is now.”

As of the report, the Chairman of the local government area, Yibala Igiri Inyang, and the Deputy PRO of Police at the state command, DSP Igri Ewa, were not available for comment on the development.
