Osun 2026: Omoworare Pledges Economic Revival, Unveils Development

A former Senator and ex-Special Assistant to former President Muhammadu Buhari on National Assembly Matters, Babajide Omoworare, has officially declared his intention to contest the 2026 governorship election in Osun State under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), promising a comprehensive plan to revive the state’s economy.

Omoworare, who represented Osun East Senatorial District between 2011 and 2019, made his declaration in Osogbo on Friday, outlining a policy framework anchored on agriculture, tourism, education, and infrastructural renewal. He stated that his goal was to reposition Osun as a model of sustainable development and responsible governance.

The APC chieftain, who previously served as Majority Leader in the Lagos State House of Assembly, said his experience in both legislative and executive capacities had equipped him with the competence needed to lead Osun toward prosperity.

“My mission is to re-engineer Osun’s economy and restore confidence in governance. I am not coming to make promises but to deliver practical solutions that will create jobs, empower farmers, and boost tourism revenue,” he said.

He lamented the state’s over-reliance on federal allocations, noting that Osun’s economic survival depended on diversifying its revenue sources. Omoworare pledged to revive moribund farm settlements, invest in modern irrigation systems, and build access roads to agricultural communities to reduce post-harvest losses.

On education, the former lawmaker assured that his administration would prioritise skill development and digital learning to prepare young people for global opportunities.

He also promised to strengthen the public-school system through better teacher welfare and improved infrastructure.

“Our young people deserve more than promises; they deserve opportunities. Education must go beyond certificates to include innovation and entrepreneurship. That is the kind of reform my government will drive,” he added.

Speaking on tourism, Omoworare said Osun’s cultural heritage and historical sites would be transformed into income-generating assets through public-private partnerships, stressing that the sector could significantly boost the state’s internally generated revenue.

Within the APC, Omoworare is one of several aspirants seeking the party’s ticket ahead of the August 8, 2026, election. He, however, called for unity within the party, saying internal cohesion remained critical to reclaiming Osun from the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

“I am committed to a fair contest and a united APC. Our strength lies in our shared vision to restore progressivism and integrity to governance,” he said.

Omoworare’s declaration marks a significant step in what is expected to be a tightly contested race, as the APC strategises to return to power in Osun after losing the governorship seat in 2022.
