Ex-VC Urges Nigerian Universities to Address Host Communities’ Challenges
The immediate past President of the Nigerian Academy of Science, Prof. Ekanem Braide, has called on universities across the country to focus more on addressing the peculiar challenges facing their host communities.
Braide, who is also the pioneer Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Lafia, Nasarawa State, made the appeal on Friday while delivering the 20th Convocation Lecture of Bowen University, Iwo, Osun State.
Speaking on the theme, “The Nigerian University in the 21st Century: Engine of Knowledge, Driver of Development,” the renowned scholar decried the limited application of research outcomes in solving societal problems.
She stressed that Nigerian universities must go beyond academic achievements and become agents of tangible development within their immediate environments.
“Universities should upscale community service. Generally, there must be a positive impact of the presence of a university in its host community,” she said.
Braide emphasised that universities have a duty to translate research into practical solutions that can improve livelihoods, promote innovation, and drive sustainable development.
She urged institutions to build stronger partnerships with government, industry, and civil society to ensure that their research outputs directly benefit society.
She also challenged higher institutions to review their curricula to meet the demands of the modern world, encouraging them to produce graduates who are not only employable but also capable of creating opportunities and addressing local challenges.
The event, attended by academics, students, and dignitaries, formed part of activities marking Bowen University’s 20th convocation ceremony, where degrees and honours were conferred on graduating students.
Braide’s remarks reinforced the growing call for universities in Nigeria to redefine their roles as catalysts of community transformation and national development.
