A video has surfaced online showing Hon. Chinedu Ogah, a member of the House of Representatives representing Ezza South/Ikwo Federal Constituency in Ebonyi State, distributing ₦500 notes to residents of his constituency.
The footage, which has gone viral across various social media platforms, shows the lawmaker surrounded by a crowd as he hands out cash to several individuals. While the exact date and location of the event have not been officially confirmed, the video has stirred widespread reactions among Nigerians, sparking debate over the gesture’s intent and significance.
According to some social media posts accompanying the clip, Hon. Ogah was said to be “supporting his people” through the cash distribution.
However, no official statement has been released from the lawmaker’s office to clarify whether the exercise was part of an empowerment programme, a personal act of generosity, or a political outreach effort.
Critics have questioned the practicality of such a gesture, arguing that ₦500 offers little relief in today’s economic climate. Others, however, have defended Ogah, saying the act reflects his willingness to stay connected with his grassroots base, especially at a time when economic hardship is affecting many Nigerians.
Hon. Chinedu Ogah, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), currently serves in the 10th National Assembly and is known for his active presence in community affairs.
As of press time, neither the lawmaker nor his aides have responded to inquiries regarding the viral video.
The incident adds to growing discussions about how Nigerian politicians engage their constituents and the broader question of what meaningful empowerment should look like in a struggling economy.
