Guinea-Bissau Army Foils Coup Attempt, Apprehend Several Senior Officers

The Guinea-Bissau Armed Forces have announced the arrest of several senior military officers accused of attempting to undermine the country’s constitutional order.

In a statement released on Friday, the army said it had successfully foiled what it described as an “attempt to subvert the constitutional order,” coming just a day before the official start of campaigning for the upcoming general elections.

“The Armed Forces of Guinea-Bissau inform the public that an attempt to subvert the constitutional order has been thwarted. Several senior officers involved in this plot have been arrested,” the statement read.

While the army did not provide specific details about the alleged plot or the identities of those arrested, it reassured citizens that calm had been restored and that the situation was under control.

Political tension has been high in Guinea-Bissau ahead of the polls, with the West African nation still recovering from years of political instability and military interference in governance.

The latest arrests come amid concerns from international observers about the fragile state of democracy in the country, which has witnessed multiple coups and power struggles since gaining independence from Portugal in 1974.

Authorities said investigations into the alleged subversion plot are ongoing, urging citizens to remain peaceful as the electoral process unfolds.
