Desist from Illegal Migration, FG Warns Public Servants, Youths

The Federal Government has cautioned public servants and young Nigerians against engaging in illegal migration and human trafficking, urging them to explore the numerous opportunities available within the country instead of risking their lives through unsafe journeys abroad
The warning was issued during a sensitisation programme held in Lagos, jointly organised by the Federal Government in collaboration with the Lagos State Government and relevant agencies. The campaign, themed “Partnership for Protection: Safeguarding Public Servants Against Trafficking and Unsafe Migration,” seeks to raise awareness about the dangers of irregular migration, human trafficking, and the exploitation of vulnerable citizens. Speaking at the event, Lagos State Commissioner for Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Relations, Mr. Gbenga Oyerinde, stressed that the state and federal governments remain committed to tackling the rising trend of illegal migration among public servants and the youth. He noted that many Nigerians who embark on irregular migration often fall victim to human traffickers, organ harvesters, or exploitative labour networks in foreign countries. Representatives of the Federal Ministry of Youth Development also reiterated the government’s determination to create more employment and skill development opportunities for young people. They urged youths to take advantage of existing empowerment programmes and capacity-building initiatives instead of resorting to unsafe migration routes Government officials at the event emphasised that illegal migration continues to cause untold hardship and loss of lives among Nigerians, as thousands of young people attempting to cross the Sahara Desert or the Mediterranean Sea end up stranded or dead. They also called for stronger collaboration among law enforcement agencies, border security, and international partners to combat trafficking and dismantle criminal networks behind these operations The sensitisation campaign forms part of the government’s broader efforts to address the root causes of human trafficking and irregular migration by promoting skill acquisition, access to funding, and economic empowerment. Participants were urged to serve as ambassadors of awareness in their communities and workplaces to prevent more Nigerians from falling victim to traffickers and smugglers Officials further assured that the Federal Government remains committed to protecting citizens’ welfare and building a nation where Nigerians can achieve success without leaving the country through dangerous and illegal means.
