Ex Council Boss Probed for Leaving ₦20m From ₦512m Allocation, Properties Traced to Her
A former Local Government Chairperson in Lagos State is facing scrutiny after reportedly leaving just ₦20 million in the coffers of her Local Council Development Area (LCDA) despite receiving a hefty ₦512 million allocation from the Federation Account only three days before the end of her tenure.
The revelation was made public by Lanre Adewole, a senior staff member of the Nigerian Tribune, in his Sunday column.
According to Adewole, the findings were contained in a report presented to the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, which subsequently became a major point of discussion during a meeting between state legislators and chairpersons of Local Government Areas (LGAs) and LCDAs across the state.
Sources familiar with the report disclosed that apart from the missing funds, a hotel and a residential building were allegedly traced to the former council boss, heightening suspicions of large-scale financial misappropriation.
It was also gathered that the Assembly expressed concern over the management of federal allocations by several outgoing local government executives, with Obasa reportedly directing relevant committees to commence a thorough investigation into the financial activities of council administrations.
“The situation raises serious accountability questions,” a source close to the Assembly said. “The legislature is determined to ensure that public funds are properly accounted for and that those found wanting face the consequences.”
As of press time, the identity of the affected chairperson has not been officially disclosed, and no formal charges have been filed. However, pressure is mounting on the Lagos State Government and anti-graft agencies to investigate the alleged diversion of funds and recover any misappropriated public assets.
