We Didn’t Restrict Senior Secondary Students’ Subject Choices for WASSCE 2026, Says WAEC

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has dismissed reports circulating on social media alleging that the examination body has issued new directives restricting senior secondary school students to specific subjects for the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Acting Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola Adesina, described the reports as false, misleading, and intended to cause confusion among students, parents, and school authorities.

Adesina clarified that WAEC does not determine or impose subject combinations on candidates, as this responsibility lies with individual schools and educational authorities in line with the approved national curriculum.

“WAEC wishes to state unequivocally that it has not issued any directive limiting students to particular subjects for the 2026 WASSCE.

The Council only administers examinations based on subjects approved by the Federal and State Ministries of Education,” the statement read.

She advised candidates, parents, and school administrators to disregard the false information and rely solely on official communications from WAEC’s verified channels, including its website and social media platforms.

WAEC reaffirmed its commitment to conducting credible examinations and maintaining fairness and transparency in its operations across member countries.

The Council also warned purveyors of fake news to desist from spreading unfounded information capable of misleading the public and undermining the credibility of the examination process.
