Police Foil Robbery Attack in Anambra, Kill One Suspect

The Anambra State Police Command has foiled a suspected armed robbery attempt in Ezinifite community, Nnewi South Local Government Area of the state.

In a statement released on Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the incident occurred in the early hours of the day and was swiftly repelled through the combined efforts of police operatives and members of the Agunechamba Vigilante Group.

According to Ikenga, the security team responded promptly to a distress call from residents, leading to a fierce gun battle between the operatives and the hoodlums.

“The hoodlums were engaged in a gun duel, and in the ensuing confrontation, one of the suspects was neutralised while others fled into a nearby bush with varying degrees of bullet wounds,” the police spokesperson said.

He added that a pump-action gun and other incriminating items were recovered from the scene, while the body of the deceased suspect was taken to a nearby mortuary.

Ikenga assured residents that an intensive manhunt has been launched for the fleeing suspects, and urged members of the public, especially medical personnel, to report anyone with gunshot injuries seeking treatment within the area.

“The Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Itam, commends the gallantry of the security operatives and reiterates the command’s commitment to ensuring the safety and security of lives and property in Anambra State,” the statement added.

He also called on residents to remain vigilant and continue to provide useful information that could assist the police in tackling criminal activities across the state.

This latest operation comes amid heightened security measures in Anambra following recent incidents of violent attacks and cult-related killings in parts of the state.
