IGP Egbetokun Denies Promotion Scandal, Reaffirms Merit-Based Police Advancement
The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has dismissed claims of any promotion irregularities within the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), affirming that all recent elevation exercises, including the accelerated promotions of certain officers, were conducted transparently and strictly on merit.
Egbetokun spoke in Abuja during the decoration ceremony of 19 newly promoted senior officers, which included Deputy Inspector General Mohammed Dan-Kwara, Assistant Inspector General Nkechi Eze, Force Medical Director, and Commissioner of Police Nandel Gonwalk.
Addressing rumours aimed at undermining the Force’s credibility, the IGP said, “Certain individuals have attempted to cast doubt on the integrity of our promotion process. But truth stands taller than rumours.
Every promotion under this administration has followed due process, transparent, merit-based, and in strict conformity with established standards.”
He stressed that nepotism and sentiment play no role in career advancement, adding that the Force rewards professionalism, performance, and discipline.
“There is no promotion scandal in the Nigeria Police Force. Our system motivates excellence, strengthens morale, and renews public trust,” he said.
Egbetokun described the newly promoted officers’ elevation as a recognition of integrity and dedication to service.
“Promotions today are not about privilege but purpose. Authority carries responsibility, and your actions will set the standard for discipline, professionalism, and morale across the Force,” he said.
The IGP also encouraged the officers to adopt modern policing strategies, highlighting the importance of technology, intelligence-led policing, and community engagement.
“Crime is evolving, driven by technology and global trends. You must leverage innovation, empower personnel, and remain responsive to communities to maintain public trust,” he added.
He concluded by urging the officers to embrace their new responsibilities with fairness, integrity, and accountability, ensuring their leadership inspires confidence within the Force and among Nigerians.
