Teju Babyface Opens Up: “I Regretted Moving to America”
Popular Nigerian comedian and television host, Teju Oyelakin, widely known as Teju Babyface, has opened up about his experience relocating to the United States, admitting that he initially regretted the decision.
The veteran entertainer shared his reflections in a recent interview, where he spoke candidly about the challenges he faced after leaving Nigeria for the U.S., and how the move affected his career and personal life.
According to Teju, the relocation which he had hoped would open new opportunities turned out to be far more difficult than he imagined.
“I thought moving to America would make life easier, but it wasn’t so,” he said. “The reality was different from what I expected. There were moments I genuinely regretted leaving Nigeria.”
The Teju Babyface Show creator explained that, despite the country’s opportunities, the cultural and professional transition was tough. He revealed that finding his footing in a new environment required humility, patience, and a complete rethinking of his ambitions.
“In Nigeria, I was already established. But in the U.S., I had to start all over again. It was humbling, and at times, very frustrating,” he added.
Teju, however, noted that the experience ultimately shaped his perspective on life, success, and purpose. He said the move taught him valuable lessons about resilience, self-worth, and redefining success beyond fame or location.
“Looking back now, I understand that every experience has its purpose. What felt like a setback was actually a period of growth,” he said.
