Falana Slams Lagos Govt for Flouting Court Order, Demolishing 100 Homes in Oworonshoki

Human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) has accused the Lagos State Government of violating a subsisting court order by demolishing more than 100 properties in the Oworonshoki area of Lagos.

Falana, in a statement on Saturday, said the government’s action amounted to “executive lawlessness” and contempt of court, stressing that affected residents had earlier obtained a restraining order preventing their eviction or demolition pending the determination of their suit.

According to him, government officials, accompanied by security operatives, stormed the community and demolished several buildings despite the order, leaving many families homeless.

The Senior Advocate of Nigeria urged the state to obey the court’s directive and compensate victims for their losses.

“It is disturbing that the Lagos State Government would resort to self-help in clear defiance of a valid court order. This is not only illegal but an assault on the rule of law,” Falana said.

However, the Lagos State Government has defended its actions, insisting that due process was followed.

Speaking to journalists, the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development said the demolished structures were illegal constructions built without government approval and on land designated for drainage and public use. He explained that owners of such properties had been served multiple notices and given an amnesty window to regularise their buildings between May and December 2024 but failed to comply.

The commissioner added that the demolition was part of efforts to restore order and safety in flood-prone areas of the state.

Residents, however, described the exercise as a “midnight operation,” claiming it took place without adequate notice and that many of the affected households had documents showing ongoing regularisation efforts.

The demolition has sparked widespread criticism, with human rights advocates calling for an investigation into the alleged disregard for judicial authority.
