Mascot Uzor-Kalu Declares 2027 Governorship Ambition Under APC in Abia

The 2023 governorship candidate of the Action Peoples Party (APP) in Abia State, Chief Mascot Uzor-Kalu, has formally announced his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Kalu, who is the younger brother of Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, made the declaration on Saturday during a meeting with APC members in Umuahia, the Abia State capital.

The former APP flag bearer, who left the APC in 2022 to establish the Action Peoples Party, said his decision to return and seek the governorship seat under the APC was motivated by his commitment to unity, peace, and progress in Abia.

Speaking at the gathering, Kalu called for greater cohesion among party members, noting that internal strife had long stunted the APC’s growth in the state.

He said, “I recently visited the party office and reminded our members that if all political parties were to contribute funds, the APC should have the most because of its strength.

But divisiveness has made that impossible. All I’m advocating for is peace.”

Reflecting on his performance in the 2023 election, Kalu described it as an expression of the people’s desire for change and pledged to pursue a governance model that prioritizes service and accountability.

“I come before you today with humility and optimism for a brighter future,” he said. “I finished fourth in the last election and congratulated the winner because it reflected the people’s choice. My focus remains on local government autonomy and the welfare of civil servants. We must build an Abia that serves everyone, not a privileged few. Our project is anchored on God — Onye ruo, ya erie (he who works should eat).”

Kalu emphasized that his decision to contest again was personal and voluntary, assuring supporters that no one influenced his choice.

He encouraged party faithful to take an active role in the forthcoming primaries, which he described as the “first crucial step” toward reclaiming leadership in the state.

Also speaking at the event, Mrs. Udonma Ezinne, the APC State Woman Leader, commended Kalu’s resolve and urged members to work together for the party’s success.

She confirmed that Kalu officially rejoined the APC on October 24, adding that peace and teamwork would be key to victory in 2027.

Similarly, party stalwart Chief Barrister Ndukwe Peter hailed Kalu’s return as a “historic moment” for the APC in Abia, assuring him of the full backing of the Reality Organisation.

In the same vein, former APC State Secretary, Barrister Perfect Okorie, emphasized the importance of unity and strategy within the party, calling on members to rally behind Kalu as a credible leader and governorship hopeful.

With his return to the APC and a renewed call for solidarity, Mascot Uzor-Kalu’s declaration has rekindled political interest within the Abia APC as preparations intensify ahead of the 2027 elections.
