Kwara APC Yet to Decide on 2027 Governorship Zoning, Says Chairman
The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara State, Hon. Sunday Fagbemi, has said the party is yet to take any official decision on zoning its governorship ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Fagbemi made this known while speaking on a radio programme monitored in Ilorin on Friday night, amid growing calls from various political stakeholders for power to shift to the Kwara North Senatorial District.
The APC chairman clarified that the issue of zoning has not been tabled for discussion within the state chapter, stressing that such a decision rests with the party’s national leadership.
“If there will be any zoning, the national executive of the party will give the directive,” Fagbemi said. “But as of now, nothing of such is on the offing. We have not even discussed it because we don’t have the schedule decided yet. Anyone who has interest to vie for any position has the right to do so.”
He added that the party remains focused on consolidating its governance achievements and strengthening its internal unity ahead of the next election cycle.
Fagbemi’s remarks come amid intensified lobbying from political groups and opinion leaders in Kwara North, who argue that the district deserves a chance to produce the next governor in the spirit of equity and fairness.
However, the APC chairman maintained that all qualified members are free to express their ambitions when the time comes, emphasizing that the party will ensure a transparent and democratic process in line with its constitution.
Political observers say the zoning debate is likely to dominate political discourse in the state as preparations for the 2027 polls gather momentum.
