FG Raises Health Insurance Enrollment to 20 Million, Targets 44 Million by 2030
The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced a significant milestone in its health sector reform, reporting that over 20 million Nigerians have now been enrolled in the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
The government has set an ambitious target of enrolling 44 million Nigerians by 2030.
The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Pate, emphasized that expanding health insurance coverage is crucial for reducing the high out-of-pocket expenditure on healthcare, which currently stands at approximately 70 percent.
He stated that a strong, efficiently financed health system is vital for national development.
To achieve the 2030 target, the government is considering legislative measures to increase the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF) from one to two percent of consolidated revenue.
Additionally, policies are being implemented to strengthen domestic health financing and protect vulnerable populations.
“This initiative is part of our broader agenda to ensure equitable access to quality healthcare for all Nigerians,” Pate said, adding that collaboration between government, private sector, and civil society is essential for sustainable health financing.
The expansion of health insurance enrollment aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s vision for universal health coverage, aiming to provide financial protection and improve healthcare access for millions of Nigerians over the next five years.
