ADC Inaugurates Adamawa Leadership, Vows to Stop Nigeria’s Drift to a One-Party State

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has inaugurated an interim leadership for its Adamawa State chapter with a bold pledge to prevent Nigeria from drifting into a one-party state. The party declared on Saturday that it will serve as a viable opposition to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and intends to take power from it in the 2027 general elections.

During the inauguration ceremony in Yola, the new ADC leaders criticized the long-standing opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), asserting that it has “steadily lost its steam and yielded too much grounds” to the APC, making it necessary for the ADC to seize the initiative.

Babachir Lawal, ADC National Vice Chairman for the North East, who chaired the inauguration, claimed the ADC would take over power in 2027 because the APC has lost credibility.

He remarked, “APC has become the refugee camp for people running from EFCC,” adding that Nigerians understand the motives behind the influx of defectors and will reject them at the polls.

The ADC showcased several high-profile opposition figures who have joined the party:

Senator Ishaku Abbo (who represented Adamawa North from 2019-2023) asserted that the ADC is the opposition force ready to “block the path to one party.” He described the ADC as a party for young people with the momentum to overtake the APC.

Senator Abdulazeez Nyako (who represented Adamawa Central from 2015-2019 and was the ADC governorship candidate in 2019) stated that the party would prioritize fairness to produce widely accepted candidates for maximum impact in 2027.

The new interim leadership for the Adamawa State chapter is chaired by Sadiq Dasin, a former speaker of the Adamawa State House of Assembly. In his inaugural speech, Dasin explained that the interim structure became necessary after two factional leaders failed to reconcile and provide harmonious leadership.

He pledged to ensure a fair playing ground for everyone as the countdown to the 2027 general elections gathers momentum.
