I Will Testify in Nnamdi Kanu’s Trial If Summoned by Court, Says Wike

Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike has declared that he will testify in the ongoing trial of the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, if he is formally subpoenaed by the court.

Wike made the declaration on Friday during his monthly media chat in Abuja while responding to questions about being listed among Kanu’s proposed witnesses.

The statement follows a motion filed by Kanu at the Federal High Court in Abuja, notifying the court of his readiness to open his defence on Friday, October 24, 2025.

The IPOB leader also revealed plans to call 23 witnesses, including Wike, former Minister of Defence Gen. Theophilus Danjuma (retd.), and former Chief of Army Staff Gen. Tukur Buratai (retd.).

Reacting to the development, Wike said he had not received any court documents and only learned of his inclusion through media reports.

He emphasised that his appearance in court would depend strictly on a formal subpoena.

“If you see Nnamdi Kanu, you ask him why he listed me. I did not go to him to say I want to be a witness; you are the one saying that. So, if you see him, ask him why did you list Wike as one of your witnesses?” he said.

The minister dismissed suggestions that he should be preparing to testify preemptively, saying legal processes must be followed.

“You don’t become a witness by reading a newspaper. Nobody has served me process; nobody has subpoenaed me,” he stated.

Wike, however, assured that he would comply fully with any court summons, stressing that respect for judicial authority remains paramount.

“So, because I saw Wike has been listed, therefore, I begin to run helter-skelter. No, you do not do that. If I am served, if I am subpoenaed to come and give witness, or to give evidence, I must obey the court, I must appear,” he added.

Kanu’s trial, which has drawn national and international attention, is expected to resume later this month as the defence opens its case before the Federal High Court in Abuja.
