Enugu Residents Brace for 10-Day Blackout as TCN Begins Maintenance Work

Enugu Residents Brace for 10-Day Blackout as TCN Residents of Enugu State are set to experience a 10-day power outage following an announcement by MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited (MEDL) over planned maintenance work by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) at the New Haven transmission station.

According to MEDL, the outage will run from October 22 to October 31, 2025, between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. daily, to enable TCN engineers to carry out major rehabilitation and reinforcement work aimed at improving power supply reliability across the state.

In a public notice issued on Monday, the company said the affected areas include parts of Trans-Ekulu, Emene, Abakpa, Thinkers Corner, Uwani, Asata, Iva Valley, Coal Camp, Zoo Estate, Golf Estate, Okpara Avenue, Kingsway, and Ngwo, among others.

The statement read in part:

“This planned interruption is necessary to allow the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) undertake critical maintenance work on its New Haven transmission station. Power supply will be restored daily after 5:00 p.m. We sincerely regret the inconvenience this may cause our customers.”

MEDL assured that the exercise was part of ongoing efforts to enhance the quality of electricity distribution and prevent sudden system failures that could result in longer blackouts.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria has also appealed for public understanding, noting that the project will strengthen the network infrastructure and reduce the frequency of unplanned outages in the South East.

Many residents and business owners in Enugu have, however, expressed concern over the planned 10-day outage, citing the impact it could have on commercial activities and daily living, especially for small-scale enterprises reliant on power supply.

Authorities have advised residents to plan ahead by charging essential devices, storing water, and making alternative power arrangements during the maintenance period.
