Chaos in Nairobi: Panic as Security Forces Open Fire During Stadium Stampede
Tens of thousands of people were seen fleeing in panic on Tuesday after Kenyan security forces reportedly opened fire during a chaotic incident at a stadium in Nairobi.
Eyewitness footage circulating on social media shows crowds scrambling for safety, with gunshots ringing out in the background as tear gas filled the air.
According to initial reports, the unrest began during a large public gathering at the Moi International Sports Centre, where citizens had converged for an unspecified event.
The situation quickly deteriorated after security personnel attempted to control an unruly crowd, allegedly using live ammunition to disperse attendees.
Panic ensued as men, women, and children stampeded toward the exits, resulting in injuries and chaos within and around the venue. Several unverified videos show people carrying the wounded and others collapsing amid the confusion.
Authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the cause of the incident or confirm the number of casualties.
However, witnesses claim that multiple people sustained gunshot wounds, while others were trampled in the rush to escape.
Human rights groups have condemned the use of force, calling for an independent investigation into the actions of the security forces. “It is unacceptable for live rounds to be fired at unarmed civilians,” said one activist in Nairobi. “The government must act swiftly to hold those responsible accountable.”
Hospitals across the capital have reportedly received dozens of injured victims, as emergency responders continued evacuation efforts late into the night.
As the situation remains tense, Kenyan authorities have urged the public to remain calm while investigations are underway.
