Islamic Cleric Arrested for Brutalising 10-Year-Old Boy in Kwara

An Islamic cleric, identified as Folorunsho Olaoti, has been arrested by security operatives in Kwara State for allegedly brutalising a 10-year-old boy living with him in the Akerebiata area of Ilorin East Local Government Area.
According to reports, the cleric was apprehended following public outrage after neighbours raised the alarm over the boy’s condition. Olaoti was said to have subjected the minor to severe physical abuse, leaving visible injuries on various parts of his body.
Sources revealed that the victim had been living with the cleric for some time, reportedly under the guise of receiving Islamic education.
However, the maltreatment came to light when concerned residents noticed the boy’s injuries and alerted authorities.
The Kwara State Police Command confirmed the arrest, stating that the case is under investigation and that the suspect will face appropriate charges upon completion of inquiries.
A spokesperson for the command condemned the incident, describing it as “inhuman and unacceptable,” and reiterated the police’s commitment to protecting vulnerable children from abuse.
Meanwhile, the boy has been taken into protective custody and is receiving medical attention. Child rights advocates in the state have called for a thorough investigation and justice for the victim, stressing the need for stricter regulation of religious institutions housing minors.
The case has sparked widespread outrage among residents, reigniting conversations about the welfare of children placed under the care of religious tutors in the region.
