Coup Against Tinubu Would Be Disaster, Warns Arisekola

Renowned journalist and publisher, Mogaji Wole Arisekola, has warned against any alleged plot to overthrow President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing such a move as “a disaster of historic proportions” that would drag Nigeria backward into chaos and bloodshed.

In a powerful statement titled “A Coup Against Tinubu, If True, Would Be a Disaster for Nigeria,” Arisekola recalled the nation’s dark history of military takeovers, stressing that coups have never brought justice or progress but only pain, instability, and division.

According to him, Nigeria’s political experience since 1966 has shown that military interventions have always left deep scars on the nation’s unity and development.

“A coup against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, if true, would not just be a mistake it would be a disaster of historic proportions. Nigeria has walked this bloody path before, and every time we tried to rebuild, we paid in tears, in blood, and in broken dreams,” he said.

Arisekola warned those allegedly plotting against the current administration that “when the gun replaces the ballot, the nation itself becomes a hostage,” insisting that democracy, despite its flaws, remains Nigeria’s only viable path to peace and progress.

He cited the sacrifices of past Yoruba political leaders such as Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Chief S.L. Akintola, Chief Bola Ige, and Chief M.K.O. Abiola, noting that the Yoruba nation had suffered immensely in the struggle for democracy and must not allow another assault on one of its own.

“Tinubu is my brother and a Yoruba man. That alone is enough for many of us to defend him morally, politically, and historically. Whether one likes him or not, Tinubu is a political giant the first Yoruba man to sit on the nation’s highest seat through democratic struggle,” Arisekola declared.

He urged Nigerians to reject any calls for unconstitutional change of power, saying those who cannot wait until the next election cycle are only serving personal interests, not the people.

“Those who cannot wait till 2031 are not fighting for the people; they are fighting for their pockets. They seek to rewrite destiny with bullets instead of ballots,” he wrote.

Arisekola further cautioned against internal betrayal within the political class, reminding detractors that history never forgives those who conspire against their own for selfish gain.

He concluded by calling on Nigerians to embrace patience, dialogue, and reform rather than instability and violence.

“Nigeria must not walk backwards into darkness. The path of the coup is the path of sorrow. The path of democracy, though slow and imperfect, is the only road that leads to lasting peace,” he said.

Arisekola, who writes from Ibadan, urged all “true sons and daughters of the soil” to stand firmly behind the Tinubu administration, warning that if the country descends into another round of instability, “there will be no victor, only victims.”
