ADC Slams APC Over Defection Claims, Says Ruling Party is “Desperate for Legitimacy”

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has strongly criticized the All Progressives Congress (APC) over its recent claim that several “key ADC figures” are set to defect to the ruling party next week.
In a statement released on Sunday, the ADC described the APC’s comments as “a desperate attempt by a sinking party to buy legitimacy through defections.”
APC National Chairman, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, had earlier boasted that the ruling party had become “the new bride” of Nigerian politics, revealing that top members of the ADC and other opposition parties were preparing to join the APC in the coming days.
His comments followed a wave of defections by politicians from rival parties into the ruling fold.
However, the ADC dismissed the statement as propaganda, accusing the APC of using political gimmicks to distract Nigerians from the country’s deepening economic hardship and governance failures.
“The APC’s obsession with defections only shows how far the party has fallen from the ideals of democracy and service to the people,” the ADC said. “Rather than addressing the cost of living crisis, insecurity, and unemployment, the ruling party is busy celebrating political cross-carpeting as an achievement.”
The opposition party further urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and not be swayed by what it described as “a spectacle of political desperation,” adding that the ADC remains committed to building an alternative platform that prioritizes integrity, competence, and true national development.
Political observers say the exchange highlights the growing tension between the ruling party and opposition blocs ahead of upcoming state elections, as parties jostle for influence and realign ahead of 2027.
