Two Officers Killed in Attack on Kaduna Police Station

Gunmen on Friday evening attacked a police station in Zonkwa town, Zangon Kataf Local Government Area of Kaduna State, killing at least two police officers in a violent raid that has left the community in fear and confusion.

According to reports, the assailants stormed the Zonkwa Divisional Police Station around dusk and opened fire indiscriminately, engaging officers on duty in a gun battle that lasted several minutes. The station is located a few meters from Kamyim Hotel in the Kurmin-Bi area of the town.

Eyewitnesses said that the attackers arrived in large numbers and shot sporadically before forcing their way into the station. Residents, caught off guard by the sudden burst of gunfire, fled for safety as the sound of gunshots echoed through the area.

“We heard heavy gunfire coming from the station. It was terrifying. Everyone was running and hiding. After the shooting stopped, we learnt that some police officers had been killed,” one resident said.

Security sources confirmed that two officers lost their lives in the attack, while several others sustained varying degrees of injuries.

The gunmen reportedly fled the scene before reinforcements could arrive.

The Kaduna State Police Command has since deployed additional personnel to the area to restore calm and launch an investigation into the incident.

Although no group has yet claimed responsibility, authorities suspect that the attackers may be part of armed criminal gangs that have been operating in parts of southern Kaduna.

Police spokesperson in the state, ASP Mansir Hassan, is yet to issue an official statement as of the time of this report, but a senior officer who spoke anonymously said efforts are underway to track down the perpetrators.

“It’s a painful loss for the Force. Our men are combing the surrounding areas, and we will ensure that those behind this cowardly attack are brought to justice,” the officer said.

The attack adds to a worrying trend of assaults on security formations in Nigeria’s north, where police and military personnel have frequently been targeted by armed groups and bandits.

Residents of Zonkwa have called on the government to increase security presence in the area, expressing fear of further violence and reprisals.

As investigations continue, authorities have urged the public to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies by providing any information that could aid in the arrest of the attackers.
