Saudi Arabia Prunes Nigeria’s Hajj Slots From 95,000 to 66,910 for 2026 Pilgrimage

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has announced a reduction in Nigeria’s Hajj quota from 95,000 to 66,910 slots for the 2026 pilgrimage season.

The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) disclosed the development, noting that the decision was part of Saudi Arabia’s global review of pilgrimage allocations aimed at improving management, accommodation, and security during the annual religious exercise.

According to NAHCON, the new figure represents a significant cut in the number of Nigerian pilgrims allowed to perform the spiritual journey next year. The Commission, however, assured intending pilgrims that it is already engaging Saudi authorities to explore possible adjustments and ensure that states and licensed tour operators are fairly accommodated.

NAHCON Chairman, Malam Jalal Ahmad Arabi, while addressing journalists in Abuja, said the Commission was also working on strategies to make Hajj fares more affordable despite the reduced quota. He emphasized that cost reduction, efficient management, and early preparations remain top priorities for the 2026 exercise.

“We are committed to ensuring that Nigerian pilgrims continue to enjoy better services, even with the reduction in slots.

Discussions are ongoing to see how this adjustment can be managed effectively,” Arabi stated.

The reduction comes amid global efforts by Saudi Arabia to streamline Hajj operations following increasing demand from across the world. Nigeria had previously been allocated 95,000 slots for the 2025 pilgrimage.

With the new figure of 66,910, state pilgrim welfare boards and private tour operators are expected to re-strategize on selection, prioritization, and logistics for intending pilgrims in the coming year.
