You’ll Keep Contesting on Social Media, Not as Nigeria’s President, Wike Mocks Peter Obi

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has mocked the former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, saying he would “continue to contest as President on social media, but not as President of Nigeria.”

Wike made the remark while speaking on the sidelines of a public event in Abuja, where he took a swipe at the former Anambra State governor over his persistent criticism of the current administration and continued popularity among online supporters.

According to the FCT Minister, politics is about structures and strategy, not social media influence.

He argued that while Obi maintains a strong presence online, political power is determined by grassroots mobilization and tangible political alliances.

“He will keep contesting on social media but not as President of Nigeria,” Wike said, adding that the Labour Party lacked the national spread and political machinery needed to win a general election.

The former Rivers State governor, known for his outspoken nature, has repeatedly criticized opposition figures for what he describes as “armchair politics” and misplaced priorities.

Wike, a prominent member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) government despite being a PDP chieftain, has often been at the center of political controversies since joining President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet.

His latest remarks are expected to spark fresh reactions from supporters of Peter Obi, who remains one of the most vocal opposition figures since the 2023 general elections.
