No Justification for ASUU Strike as All Demands Fully Met, I Insists FG

The Federal Government has declared that there is no justification for any industrial action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), insisting that all major requests made by the union have been adequately addressed.

Minister of Education, Mr. Tunji Alausa made this known on Monday in Abuja, while speaking on the Federal Government’s efforts to stabilize the university system and prevent further disruptions to academic activities.

Alausa explained that President Bola Tinubu’s administration inherited most of the outstanding issues between the Federal Government and ASUU, but has since taken significant steps to resolve them.

“This administration has demonstrated good faith and commitment to the education sector. We’ve addressed every request by ASUU, including welfare, revitalization funds, and the review of the university system. There is absolutely no need for a strike,” the minister said.

He emphasized that the government remains committed to promoting quality education through improved funding, infrastructure development, and staff welfare, while calling on ASUU to maintain dialogue rather than resorting to strikes.

Mamman also disclosed that the Federal Government has been engaging the union through several committees and has fulfilled key agreements relating to earned academic allowances and salary arrears.

“We are addressing issues in phases to ensure sustainability and fairness. The President has directed that all commitments made to ASUU be honored,” he added.

ASUU had recently threatened to embark on another strike over alleged unfulfilled agreements, including funding for university revitalization and the implementation of the 2009 agreement.

However, the Education Minister maintained that with the government’s current level of commitment and responsiveness, there is no basis for any industrial action that could jeopardize students’ academic progress.
