Bauchi Records 50% Rise in Girl-Child School Enrollment

The Bauchi State Government has announced a remarkable 50 percent increase in the enrollment of girls in schools across the state.

The Commissioner for Education, Lawan Rimin Zayam, disclosed this on Saturday during a street walk and awareness rally held in Bauchi metropolis to commemorate the global event themed “The Girl I Am.”

According to Zayam, the increase is the result of sustained interventions under the World Bank supported Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) and the Conditional Cash Transfer Programme, both of which have encouraged families to prioritize the education of their daughters.

“We have seen an encouraging shift in attitudes towards girl-child education. Enrollment has risen by about 50 percent in the last few years due to the combined impact of AGILE and our cash transfer initiatives,” Zayam said.

“This shows that when the right support and incentives are in place, parents are more willing to allow their girls to attend and remain in school.”

The commissioner reaffirmed the Bauchi State Government’s commitment to ensuring that every girl has access to quality education in a safe and inclusive environment, adding that the state will continue to invest in education infrastructure, teacher training, and community sensitization.

Representatives of civil society groups, women organizations, and students participated in the street walk, which featured placards and chants advocating equal opportunities for girls in education, leadership, and digital innovation.

The 2025 International Day of the Girl Child, celebrated annually on October 11, focuses on empowering girls to realize their rights and potential. This year’s theme, “The Girl I Am,” emphasizes self-worth, identity, and the importance of giving girls a platform to shape their own futures.

Education advocates in Bauchi hailed the progress as a major step toward bridging gender gaps in education, calling on stakeholders to sustain the momentum and expand the reach of ongoing empowerment programmes.
