Zelensky Calls on Trump to Help End Russia-Ukraine War in “Positive and Productive” Phone Chat

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has appealed to U.S. President Donald Trump to help broker a peace deal to end the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia. The appeal came during what Zelensky described as a “very positive and productive” phone call held on Saturday.

According to a statement from the Ukrainian presidency, discussions centered on possible diplomatic efforts to halt Russia’s invasion, strengthen Ukraine’s defenses, and safeguard critical energy infrastructure ahead of the winter season.

Zelensky hailed Trump’s past diplomatic record, citing his Middle East peace initiatives as an example of what could be achieved through dialogue and negotiation.

“If a war can be stopped in one region, then surely other wars can be stopped too including the Russian war,” Zelensky said after the call.

Reports by Axios indicated that both leaders also discussed the potential supply of Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine as part of broader military cooperation talks.

The move signals a fresh diplomatic push by Kyiv as the conflict grinds into its third year, with Ukraine seeking new international momentum for peace negotiations.

Meanwhile, the Kremlin reacted cautiously to reports of U.S. involvement, with spokesman Dmitry Peskov insisting that any mediation must respect “Russia’s legitimate interests.”

Observers say Zelensky’s outreach to Trump is a strategic attempt to re-engage Washington’s influence and to demonstrate Ukraine’s readiness for dialogue without compromising its sovereignty.

Since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, the United States has been one of Ukraine’s strongest allies, providing billions of dollars in military and humanitarian aid. With the war showing little sign of ending soon, Kyiv appears to be turning once again to high-level diplomacy in search of a breakthrough.
